I think I might retire…

Ed Whitlock on his way to breaking another M80 World record (credit - Canadian Masters, Photographer Mike Mendis)

So not strictly ultra news, but this is too good to let pass. I’ve just come across this simply astounding feat, which shows that you really are never too old.

Ed Whitlock is over 80 years old, and this weekend he broke not one, but two world records in the space of 25 hours. On Saturday, he munched his way through the M80 10km record, smashing it by over 90 seconds to record an incredible 42mins 59 seconds, that an average of 4min 19sec kms!!!

Then Sunday morning, he ran an incredible 20mins 58 secs for the 5k to break his own world record from two weeks previously. All I can say is ‘How the hell?’ Of course, talent plays a big part in this, but to keep yourself in that kind of shape at that age is phenomenal. Good on him we say.

I'm a mediocre runner who can bat above his average when I train hard. A man of extremes, I do enjoy everything life offers and consider it an absolute pleasure just to be able to put one foot in front of the other and let my mind wander somewhere different.
