Gear Reviews

Given that each of us runs a hell of a lot, we thought we’d give you some opinions and thoughts about some of the gear we use on an almost daily basis. It’s fair to say that a good deal of our salaries are spent each month on the latest and greatest gear, specifically designed for trail nutters like us. We’re honest, opinionated but above all fair, but if you have an opinion too, we’d love to hear from you.

Our reviews are split into five general categories:

  • Accessories
  • Backpacks and Hydration
  • Clothing
  • Nutrition
  • Running Shoes

To add a little colour and flavour to our reviews, we’ve decided to rank them based on a little scale that we’ve devised here at Ultra168. Given our love and passion for mountains, we thought it rather apt to rank each item of gear based on how high we think it would scale a mountain, ranging from Basecamp through to Summit with the following scores:

1 – Basecamp

Oh dear. Seems like altitude sickness got you before you’d even left your camp. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200, please go home and spend your well earned cash on something a little easier, like a stage race in the desert.

2 – CP1

At least you had a go, but seems like your climbing skills leave a lot to be desired. Suggest you return to basecamp and give chef a hand with the cooking for the ‘real’ climbers

3 – CP2

Not a bad attempt. You gave it a pretty good shot, but seems like you didn’t quite do enough training to get you further up the mountain. A bit more experience and you’ll be sure to climb further in the future.

4 – CP3

Nice work. You’re a real team player and you’ve shown the metal for being a proper explorer. A few minor adjustments and the summit is well within your reach.

5 – Summit

You’re pure class and have proved what it takes to reach the top of the peak. There’s not much more we can show you. Go off, preach to the masses Sensei and impart your knowledegable ways to those at Basecamp.

To see our reviews, just hover your mouse above the gear reviews tab, and a drop down menu will appear where you can chose which category you wish to see. If there’s a piece of kit you’d like us to review too, drop us a line on email, or via our Twitter handle. Similarly, if you’ve reviewed a piece of gear and would like to post something on our website, please do get in touch and we’d be happy to chat and accommodate any ideas you may have.

Cheers, Ultra168
